Commenting on today's ONS unemployment numbers, Damian said:
"We know this pandemic is having a very hard effect on our economy, as it is on other countries', but it is much too early to get the full picture on that from the unemployment figures. Policy is rightly focused on seeking to support jobs and otherwise healthy businesses, and Britain's package on this is one of the most extensive in the world. But we know that there are still more challenging economic times to come. It is important that we support businesses, especially in hard hit sectors like hospitality, tourism and parts of retail. And key too that we are all focused on building skills and opportunities for the next generation including through the Kickstart programme, and apprenticeships."
