The following statement was issued on Tuesday 5th November:
Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, has announced that he has stepped down from the Shadow Cabinet after serving as shadow education secretary in the interim period following the general election until the election of a new party leader.
Damian said: "It has been a great privilege to lead the shadow education team for this time. I know my successor will continue to hold the government to account, striving to ensure that the enormous progress made by brilliant teachers between 2010 and 2024, as seen in the international comparisons of attainment, is built upon to the benefit of all children.
“I will retain a strong interest in education, as I have throughout my time in Parliament, and there are many important aspects to debate – from early years education to the school curriculum review to the government’s plans for a new Skills England body. But I am also looking forward to covering wider subject areas. And most of all, as ever, my number one priority is representing the interests of the people of East Hampshire.”
