Following an announcement by the Health Secretary in January 2025 , the plans to rebuild Basingstoke Hospital have now been delayed, with construction starting no earlier than 2037 and doors expected to open in 2040. Basingstoke Hospital is in 'wave 3' of the New Hospital Programme and has a cost estimate of £2 billion.
The delay to the new hospital is obviously a disappointment to all those who regularly use Basingstoke Hospital, particularly in areas such as Four Marks and Alton. The immediate priority is ensuring that funding is available to properly maintain the existing hospital estate until such a time that the buildings are replaced with a modern, state of the art hospital.
The case for this new hospital in Hampshire has already been well made already by clinicians, staff and elected representatives. In 2023, a consultation sought views on the proposals to build a new specialist acute hospital in Hampshire (including whether it should be located on the site of Basingstoke Hospital or near Junction 7 of the M3), as well as plans to refurbish Winchester Hospital and a reorganisation of how and where outpatient services are provided. More details can be found here. We understand from Hampshire Together - a partnership between Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust and the Hampshire Integrated Care Board - that the feedback from the consultation will be taken forward to inform future decisions about the hospital and the delivery of secondary care in the North Hampshire area.
