Damian is hosting an event in Alton that brings together employment, training and volunteering opportunities for the over 50’s.
Called New Directions, the event is being held at Alton College on Tuesday 11th April, between 12 noon and 6pm, with free entry and free parking. Visitors will be able to meet a wide range of local employers, training services and volunteering organisations, all keen to offer opportunities for this age group.
Damian said:
“I’m really excited to see this event come together. There are many older people who are looking for a new direction - whether it’s a new job, finding a training course to learn new skills, or spending time volunteering with a local charity.
“People in this age group often have a wealth of experience, but may not know where to find the employers, training services or voluntary bodies that are able to help them put that experience to work.
“This event brings many of these local organisations together under one roof, making it easy for people from across the area to come and see a whole range of opportunities.”
There will also be a series of talks on the day, with speakers offering guidance and practical advice for people looking for a new direction.
The Government recently launched its “Fuller Working Lives” strategy to encourage people to extend their careers, and to encourage employers to increase the number of staff they employ aged over 50.
Life expectancies in Britain are rising, and by the middle of the 2030s it is forecast that people aged 50 or older will account for over half of the country’s adults.
Damian added:
“There are now more older people in employment than ever before which is great news, but we must keep up this momentum. It’s good for employers, good for employees and good for the economy.
“I hope the event will show people - including those under 50 who come along - the many ways their skills can be used in either paid employment or voluntary work, working full time or part time, and the training and support services available to help them find that new direction.”
The event is supported by East Hampshire District Council, Hampshire County Council, Community First, Alton College and The Department for Work and Pensions.
