Whitehill and Bordon to get a banking hub

The following press release has been issued today by Link:

LINK: Hampshire to get its first banking hub following request from local MP

LINK, the UK’s Cash Access and ATM network, today announced residents and businesses in Whitehill and Bordon will soon find it easier to access banking services thanks to the addition of a new banking hub in the town. The announcement follows a request from local MP, Damian Hinds.

Banking hubs are shared banking spaces, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. When opened, the hub will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions. In addition, there will be private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy. The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days.

Banking hubs can be recommended by LINK through a community request or following the announcement of the closure of the bank branch in a location. Successful recommendations are determined by several factors including the number of shops in the area, demographics, and proximity to other banking services.

To date, LINK has recommended 125 banking hubs. There are currently 50 banking hubs up and running across the UK. This is the first hub to be recommended in Hampshire.

The banking hub will now be delivered by Cash Access UK. Over the next few weeks, it will begin to engage with the local community and will start to look for potential sites. The hub will likely open in 12 months’ time.

Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire: “I am absolutely delighted that Whitehill and Bordon has been selected to have a banking hub. The last physical bank branch in the town closed some time ago and we have long argued that the town needs better banking provision, particularly given the number of cash dependent people and small businesses. The hub will be a great addition to the town and will complement the redevelopment underway.”

Nick Quin, Head of Financial Inclusion LINK: “Banking hubs are making a significant difference to local high streets and communities, so we are pleased to recommend a banking hub in Whitehill and Bordon. This is the first we have recommended in Hampshire, so thank you to Damian Hinds for getting in touch.”

Banking in East Hampshire

It is a sad fact that the number of high street bank branches in local communities is diminishing. In East Hampshire, some have closed in recent months, including HSBC in Alton, and some are earmarked for closure later this year, e.g.
